NEW JERSEY
A family of four approached us shortly after going under contract on their first home with the goal of preparing the house for an immediate move-in, while thoughtfully planning for its long-term evolution. Working within a tight timeline before closing, the project combined strategic space planning, furnishing guidance, and light renovations—including floor refinishing, full-house paint, trim restoration, and fireplace refinishing—alongside early studies for future remodeling possibilities. The work focused on preserving the character of this 80+ year old house while introducing a fresh visual direction.
The scope of the initial renovations focused on refinishing the floors, restoring the fireplace, repainting the entire home, and refreshing trim details throughout.
But from the beginning, the work was approached as more than a cosmetic update. The family knew the house would eventually require larger renovations to support them long term, and wanted to make thoughtful short-term decisions, that would preserve future possibilities later.
The project balanced two parallel goals: immediate space planning and furnishing strategies for move-in, alongside early exploration of future remodeling opportunities. Furniture layouts and room functions were carefully considered so the family could settle into the home, while broader conversations explored how the house could evolve over time without losing the integrity of its original architecture.
A large part of the collaboration centered around the visual direction of the home. While the clients naturally gravitated toward modern interiors, we quickly agreed that fully modernizing the house would feel disconnected from its character. Instead, the goal became to refresh the home and breathe new life into it while preserving the warmth and personality that made it special in the first place.
The palette focused on warm whites, contrasting with veined black stone accents, and natural materials that complemented the age of the home. Great care was taken to allow the landscaping beyond the bay windows to become part of the atmosphere of the interior.
Throughout the process, the work centered on clarity and sequencing: identifying what needed to happen immediately, what could wait, and how each decision could support a larger long-term vision for the house. The result is a home that already feels refreshed and deeply personal, while still leaving room for thoughtful future evolution.
The floors have been restored, the fireplace has regained its presence within the home, and the family was able to move in, knowing the early decisions made under pressure were still part of a cohesive and intentional plan for the years ahead.
